After a well rested evening for the Red Liners in Toronto, they faced their toughest team in the round robin part of the Eastern Canada Cup tournament. Toronto and Montreal had already played their second round game with Montreal earning 7 points
(8 points total) and Toronto just 1 point (2 points total). The Red Liners were treated with playing in the newly renovated Mattamy Athletic Center at the Gardens which was built inside of Maple
Leaf Gardens. The actual rink is built around the green seat level with the sky dome from the original Maple Leaf still intact.
The Red Liners came out sluggish in the first period as they had trouble controlling the puck in the offensive zone but did have numerous scoring chances. The Ottawa netminder was bouncing on all fours trying to stop those pucks. The first period would end in a tie, resulting in 1 point for each time. The boys in red finally got on the board off a half slapshot-half pass to Rub Rob next the far post who deflected it behind the Ottawa goalie. But Ottawa would tie it up with less than 2 minutes left in the period off breakaway and slapshot into the upper far corner of the goal. Again, both team earned 1 point. The third period looked like a repeat of the first period with neither team establishing much offense. With a little more than 2 minutes left, the Red Liners got called for a hooking penalty. Things did not look good. But strong defensive play lead to a loose puck in front of the Ottawa goalie where Mixy shot a bouncing puck through the five hole. This shorthanded goal would be the period and game winner and earn the Red Liners 2 points for the period and the game.
After 2 rounds, the Red Liners take a commanding lead in points with 13 points while Ottawa is in second place with 9 points. Montreal is in third place with 8 points. Toronto is in last place with 2 points. To ensure first place in the playoffs, the Red Liners will have to earn at least 4 points in their last game.
