Let’s blame it on the snow. Or maybe the limited roster. Or was it the fact leading scorer Rusty Fleury suffered a broken thumb in last game and is now playing with an 8-inch cast and no ability to shoot. Or that Larry Zyks has been hiding his interest in leading the team in penalty minutes. Whatever the reason, or reasons, the CGHA suffered a 6-1 setback Thursday (Feb. 5) against NYR in a game played at West Meadows.
CGHA falls to 6-5 following the team’s second loss this season to NYR in as many tries. Zyks gave CGHA a 1-0 lead at 10:50 of the first period, scoring on an assist from defenseman Andy Rogers. NYR tied it about five minutes later with a power-play goal – and the game was tied, 1-1, after one.
Then, rather quickly, the CGHA roof caved it. NYR grabbed what proved to be the game-wining goal at 13:24, then made it 3-1 less than two minutes later. It was 4-1 after two periods. NYR added two more in the third, despite solid goaltending from John Adams.
CGHA out-shot NYR 22-13, including a point-blank scoring chance from Terry McDonnell in the first period. However, CGHA also was out-penalized, with seven penalties called against CGHA members versus five for NYR, including a 10-minute misconduct issued to Zyks. Nonetheless, Jacobson said this was the best officiating crew of the season … or maybe just the best-looking, specifically, Brandon Mills.
