Chuck Jacobson scored 24 seconds into the CGHA’s game Tuesday (Jan. 27) against the Drunk Penguins at the Nelson Sports Complex in Rolling Meadows.
And so began the rout.
Despite only leading 1-0 after the first period, the CGHA team erupted for a team-record seven goals in the second en route to a 9-0 victory, highlighted by right winger Rex Babiera’s first career goal, which earned him the Game Puck. Jacobson’s game-winning goal, off a pass from Rusty Fleury, moves the CGHA record to 6-4 and avenges an earlier loss to the Drunk Penguins. Fleury-to-Jacobson was magical at 13:08 of the second period before Babiera scored on an assist from Jacobson at 9:30 to gave the CGHA team a 3-0 lead.
Center Larry Zyks made it 4-0 less than a minute later off a pass from Terry McDonnell. Defenseman Mike Kelly scored the first of his two second-period goals at 6:33; Zyks was credited with an assist on both of Kelly’s goals. Defenseman Shane Thompson deflected home an Andy Rogers shot at 5:24 that Fleury also received an assist on to make it 6-0.
Thompson arrived in Rolling Meadows with his own personal cheering section and Ann Sather “goodies” for everyone. (Due to the convincing win, Thompson is now obligated to bring cinnamon rolls to all games, along with coffee for Zyks and of course, chardonnay for himself. Or maybe Kelly will deliver – hint hint.)
Right wing Ryan Ruskin scored his second goal of the season at 3:07 of the second off a pass from Zyks. Zyks capped the scoring with an unassisted tally with 4:42 remaining.
Goalie Keith Halverson stopped about 20 shots to earn the shutout and move his season record to 4-1, with only five goals allowed. Andy Rogers and Michael Ko each played rock-solid on defense.
CGHA returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 5, against NYR. Game time is 10:55 p.m., at West Meadows.
