The North Shore Red Liners had a tough time with their first meetup against Abt. They expected a similar game for their second meetup. They were not disappointment. The only variation was the very small bench on the Abt side which could have tired
out the players and make the game more competitive. Unfortunately, that would not be the case. This game also featured the first league game for Mr. Powers.
This began well for the Red Liners as they matched up with the offensive threats by Abt. Several attempts were made but good defensive plays and saves by Big Lee kept the score 0-0. However, the Abt would open the flood gates about half way through the period and end up notching 3 goals in the first period.
The second period continued the scoring by Abt. The increased difficulty in line changes factored in several long defensive shifts that tired out the guys in red. Goals would be scored during those shifts. Don Juan, Alex M, and Big Daddy also had several offensive chances and shots on goal. Unfortunately, none of those pucks would go in.
The third period had renewed effort by the Red Liners to try to score at least one goal. It would be the guys in red that would score first in this period. Big Daddy would did pick up a lose puck in the neutral zone and skated to the near offensive circle. He fired a wrist shot that
bounced its way just past the Abt netminder. Abt would charge back with 2 unanswered goals of their own. Big Lee did make several nice saves from point blank shots on the net. Bleech did fired a slapshot directly at the Abt goalie which was deflect just in time to prevent it entering the net.
Against a more closely matched team, the Red Liners did show moments of good executions and defensive plays. As line combinations change from game to game, it can be difficult for forwards of particular lines to harmonize. That will be something to all teammates and captains to work on. The defense will need
to find that combination to provide some offensive threats while being able to clear out rebounds with better back checking. In his first game, Mr. Powers surprised a few opponents with his “backwards pass between the legs” move. They move onto another tough opponent, Charros, next Thursday at 10:40pm
