The Chicago Gay Hockey Association ( CGHA ) Blackwolves are on a roll. The predominantly gay hockey team defeated the Misfits 2 at the Nelson Sports Complex in Rolling Meadows for their seventh consecutive win, the longest win streak in team history.
Rusty Fleury capped the come-from-behind sudden-death overtime victory with the game-winning goal at 3:46 of the extra period, scoring on a rebound off a shot from defenseman Brian Merlot. The Blackwolves won 4-3 despite trailing 3-1 with about five minutes to play in regulation time.
Ben Thomas scored at 4:06 of the third period on an assist from Larry Zyks, cutting the score to 3-2. Thomas scored again at 1:13 on an assist from Merlot, forcing the extra period.
CGHA Goalie John Adams stopped 15 shots, while the Blackwolves peppered the Misfits’ goalie with 34 shots.
The Misfits opened a 1-0 lead midway into the first period, then made it 2-0 with :19 to play in the second period.
Pat Mazzone scored the Blackwolves’ first goal of the game at 11:32 of the third period on assists from his linemates, Fleury and Michael Ko.
