Spin-offs 4, Misfits 3
What a night it was Friday, May 21st, for the CGHA, which began play in the Rolling Meadows’ spring/summer league. Now known as the Spin-offs, the team overcame an early deficit and a late flurry to defeat the Misfits, 4-3, at the Nelson Sports Complex.
The Misfits jumped out to a 1-0 first period goal at 6:27, but Larry Zyks answered less than three minutes later on an assist from winger Andy Rogers and goalie Keith Halverson. Rogers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 11:23 of the second period after Rusty Fleury won the draw just outside of the offensive zone to defenseman Laura Moss. Moss than gave a perfect pass to Rogers for the first of his two-goal, one-assist evening.
Zyks converted a breakaway with 1:42 to play in the second, giving the Spin-offs a 3-1 edge. Rogers’ second tally came at 13:00 of the third period after Fleury fed winger Austin Baidas who then gave it to Rogers. Baidas’ assist was his first career point – and he got the puck from the play. Goalie Keith Halverson made about 25 saves, especially some keys stops in the final minutes after the Misfits cut the score to 4-3 with 1:14 remaining.
Defenseman Tom Economou made a solid debut, while fellow defensemen Brian Merlot and Brian Ray were solid as usual. Moss played strong defense too after dropping back mid-way in the first period. Spin-off’s next game is Wednesday, May 26, against the Drunk Penguins. Game time is 10:45 p.m., at the Nelson Sports Complex.
