The CGHA team continued its winning ways Wednesday (Dec. 17) in Glenview with its most impressive win to date: a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Morning Wood. The team improves to 3-2 overall and is now riding a three-game winning streak, which ties the longest in club history.
Morning Wood grabbed a 1-0 lead at 4:44 of the first period on a rebound goal past goalie Keith Halverson. But that was all Halverson surrendered in a sensational performance, stopping about 30 shots, including a flurry in the final few minutes of the game.
Andy Rogers tied the scored with 1:12 remaining in the first with an unassisted goal. Rusty Fleury scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 10:09 of the third period. Chuck Jacobson passed to Larry Zyks behind the Morning Wood goal on a CGHA power-play. Zyks then dished it to Fleury who paused, then, from the right side, shot it into the upper-left corner. Fleury scored CGHA’s insurance tally with :16 remaining. He blocked a Morning Wood shot, then connected with perfect aim into the empty-net on a shot from the far blue line.
CGHA’s three-man defensive crew – Mike Kelly, Shane Thompson and Brian Merlot – was rock-solid against a strong offensive team. Greg Bates also played defense in the third period. Laura Moss played solid offensively, highlighted by a near-goal in the third period.
CGHA’s final game of 2003 is Monday, Dec. 22, starting at 10:55 p.m. at West Meadows against the Demons.
