Spin Gives Fans a Dramatic Win in OT

Spin knew it had to please it’s fans Friday night in Vernon Hills after being featured in the Daily Herald the day before.  Spin played in front of it’s biggest crowd of the year on Fan Appreciation Night at the Glacier rink.

Brian Melot got Spin on the board in the first period to grab the lead.  Storm then tied the game shortly after that to make it 1 – 1 after one.  Storm took a 2 – 1 lead in the second.  Larry Zyks tied the game at 2 pushing the puck by the Storm goaltender.

In third period action, Greg Bates gave Spin the lead in the middle of the period.  Spin could taste their first victory.  With less than a minute in the third a Storm player picked up the puck at the blue line, and fired a slap shot beating the Spin net minder Keith Halverson.  It seemed that Spin’s balloon had popped.  Spin knew this was it. A fan and GLBT supporter Chris Fry of Palos Hills said after the Storm tied the game “The fans were dejected after knowing what Spin has gone through all year”

Spin was in overtime for the third time this season against the Storm, and had been through this before.  Spin was determined to win their first game on the final regular season game before the playoffs.  Keith Halverson by far Spin’s MVP of the year frustrated many of the Storm players giving Spin every opportunity to win.  During a scramble in front on the Storm net, Zyks got the puck to team captain Chuck Jacobson who stuffed the puck under the pad of the goaltender, giving Spin its first official win in CGHA history.

Dave Piccolo of Indianapolis said “This was my first time seeing the Chicago Spin.  It was much more than I expected, and I am proud of the team and their accomplishment”
