WHAT: PUCK-er Up 10th Anniversary– Cinco de Drinko

PUCK-er is a fundraising event for the Chicago Gay Hockey Association (CGHA) as well as a way for our fans to come hang out with the team and watch us play. We will meet at Crew to eat, drink and hang out. All the fans and players will then board a bus to our game downtown. The bus will have free 312! After the game the bus will drop off at The Sofo Tap for a continued night of fun.

WHEN: Saturday, May 5th

3:00pm – 5:00pm – Meet at Crew to eat, drink and hangout with the team.
5:00pm – The bus departs to head to Johnny’s Ice House West downtown.
6:20pm – 8:20pm – Cheer on the Chicago Gay Hockey Association as they face off, CGHA vs. CGHA. We’ll also have other events including a raffle and fan events!
9:30pm – 11:00pm – Spend more time with the team at The Sofo Tap!

COST: PUCK-er Up is a fundraising event for the Chicago Gay Hockey Association, the cost is $20. The cost is ONLY TO RIDE THE BUS, space is limited so please reserve your spot today! We want to share some of our prouder moments from 2011 as well as post our minutes from the meeting. So here they are.

 

-In 2011 the CGHA won the NYC Chelsea Challenge championship
-Market Days Classic Tournament – next is 2013
-We hosted over 120 hockey players from around the world
-We launched a youth floor hockey program at Center on Halsted Floor Hockey Launch with the Blackhawks and Rahm
-Hosted a Learn to Skate
-Participated in high school Gay-Straight Alliance outreach
-CGHA Night at the Wolves
-We started hosting monthly practices with a coach
-Some of our more charitable work includes:
-$3,500 to EQ IL via the Celebrity Pie Toss
-$1,500 to the American Cancer Society via the Walk & Roll
-$250 to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation

Additionally, we are branding a new team within the CGHA. We have a form that’s live now to submit ideas for a new team name and/or logo. If you have ideas for a team name/logo then please submit them via the form by Monday 4/1. On Tuesday 4/2 we will open an online vote to determine what the new look of the CGHA will be! Voting for the new name/logo will close on Friday 4/6. Our goal is to have new jerseys by our next fundraiser on Friday 4/27.

The Athletic Alliance of Chicago (AAC) and the Chicago Gay Hockey Association are presenting the Spring 2012 Floor Hockey season! This season will start on February 19th! Teams will play each week at Center on Halsted. Games are played Sunday nights between 6:00pm and 8:00pm with each team playing twice each night.

After many people have asked over the last year we’ve decided to host a learn to skate event this Saturday 1/28!

Please join us at the Warren Park outdoor rink (6601 N Western Ave.) between 3pm and 5pm for a chance to hit the ice. The only cost is $6 to rent skates. We’ll have as many of our players in attendance as possible to help teach anyone who is willing to skate. Come on by and get paired up with a CGHA player for some one on one skating lessons.

The production of Five Flights by Immediate Theatre will be playing November 10th-December 18th at 621 W. Belmont Ave. The play features a gay professional hockey player in a comedy that includes issues of faith, sexuality, commitment and longing for something just out of reach.

The CGHA worked with the Immediate Theatre to provide hockey equipment for a scene at an ice rink. As a thank you to the CGHA they are offering players, fans and friends a special discount for the November 18th show. The purpose of the event was twofold.  First, it promoted physical activity for youth and the Blackhawks helped this out with equipment donations that will allow more people to experience hockey.  (For those who play, we know it is expensive).  Second, as Congressman Quigley said, “Hockey is for everyone …”

Thanks again to everyone who made the event possible: all those who participated, supporters at the event, CGHA members who volunteered, the Chicago Blackhawks for their generosity, and Congressman Quigley and Mayor Emanuel for their support of the program.

This placed them into 4th place. Their first playoff game was against an old rival, The Centurions. They beat them 6-3 to move into the 2nd round of the playoffs. They met the Rats who proved to be a tough competitor. The CGHA lost 7-1, ending the season.

Still, it was a great first season at their new home, Johnny’s Ice House, which is the premier adult rec hockey league in Chicago.

The CGHA anxiously awaits the start of their second season at Johnnys.
