Jan 24: Thin Ice 6, Spin 2

Despite a near-capacity, record-setting crowd Saturday (Jan. 24) at the Nelson Sports Complex in Rolling Meadows, the CGHA team suffered a 6-2 loss to Thin Ice. CGHA falls to 5-4.

Winger Terry McDonnell continued his sensational scoring pace, collecting his third goal of the season (in five games played) at 9:52 of the first period on a pass from center Rusty Fleury. However, CGHA’s lead lasted only about five minutes – and the period ended tied, 1-1. Thin Ice, which has only lost twice this season and is one of the most physical teams in the league, scored again at 3:25 of the second period, then grabbed what proved to be the game-winner with :36 remaining in the middle period.

It was 4-1 when winger Andy Rogers scored his second goal of the season, a beautiful upper-corner tally from the right side off assists from Larry Zyks and Shane Thompson. Thin Ice scored the final two goals on an open net when CGHA pressed for potential game-tying tallies.

Zyks and Chuck Jacobson each received 10-minute misconducts late in the third period. Jacobson skated toward a Thin Ice player in Paul Bunyon, tree-chopping fashion, though he had no intention of actually striking the opponent. Jacobson’s antics, following yet another Thin Ice roughing penalty, received a two-minute slash penalty against Jacobson, then choice comments for the officials led to the secondary penalty. Zyks, meanwhile, was penalized in the final minutes for, uh, questioning the referee’s vision.

CGHA returns to action at 10:50 p.m., this Tuesday (Jan. 27) against the Drunk Penguins at the Nelson Sports Complex.
