Terry McDonnell scored the first goal in his SPIN career Tuesday night at the Nelson Sports Complex in Rolling Meadows, on assists from Andy Rogers and Rusty Fleury.
McDonnell’s tally, however, was not enough as SPIN fell 4-1 to NYR.
But there was plenty of positive news from the game … and also newspaper coverage. A Chicago Tribune staff photographer was present, snapping literally hundreds of digital photos for a lengthy, upcoming story about the team that will appear in the paper’s Metro section. (The SPIN story in the Trib is, tentatively, slated to run next week). The photographer shot photos inside the locker, then hung out on the SPIN bench for the first two periods, shooting action photos and countless candid shots.
The loss marred the solid season debut of defenseman Greg Bates, who drives to games from his home in Kenosha, Wisc. Plus, Tuesday’s game featured the return of goalie Keith Halverson. Halverson and John Adams will be splitting the goaltending chores this season.
NYR opened a 1-0 lead in the first period when the puck deflected off a SPIN defenseman, then past Halverson. It was 2-0 before SPIN struck. Rogers and Fleury skated up 2-on-1. Rogers got a shot on net that was stopped, but landed on McDonnell’s stick. He promptly buried it into the lower right corner of the net.
NYR answered with a goal, making it 3-1, then added the final tally late in the third period.
Larry Zyks, Chuck Jacobson, Ryan Ruskin and Rex Babiera each provided needed offensive punch, while Brian Merlot was rock-solid on defense.
The game also featured SPIN’s largest cheering section to date in Rolling Meadows, numbering, uh, four. No doubt the faithful fans – Jake, Michael, Anthony and XXX – will be present when SPIN returns to action on Dec. 2 (10:55 p.m. at West Meadows).
