CGHA, Wearing Its New Uniforms, Was Not Enough For The Drunk Penguins

Drunken Penguins 4, Spin 2
Thursday, November 13

SPIN kicked off the 2003-2004 regular-season Thursday night at the Nelson Sports Complex in Rolling Meadows and despite a flurry of shots against the Drunk Penguins, the team was defeated 4-2.

SPIN falls to 0-1, and returns to action Tuesday night, Nov. 18, against NYR at 10:50 p.m. at the Nelson Sports Complex.

SPIN’s offensive attack Thursday night was led by this season’s team captain (as voted by his peers), right-handed centerman Larry Zyks, who had several scoring chances early. SPIN fell behind 1-0 late in the first period, then 2-0 in the second period.

Defenseman Mike Kelly tallied his first goal of the season, cutting the score to 2-1 in the second period with a shot from the left point.

The Drunk Penguins made it 3-1 late in the second period, but SPIN wasn’t giving up. Center Andy Rogers brought the puck up ice in a two-on-one break in the third period. Rogers dished to defenseman Rusty Fleury who moved to his left, then ripped a slapshot goal into the upper right corner, cutting the score to 3-2

The Drunk Penguins scored once more against SPIN goalie John Adams, who turned in a solid effort. SPIN tested the Drunk Penguins’ goal several times in the third, but couldn’t get a tying goal.

Brian Merlot was solid on defense and had several key offensive rushes. Laura Moss played steady forward and several times dropped back on defense when the team’s offensive-minded defensemen moved forward.

Shane Thompson served as SPIN’s “coach” Thursday after receiving a three-game suspension for his involvement in a fight.
